Tooth root extraction

Treatment or tooth root surgery?

Root canal treatment also known as endodontic therapy is aimed at infection removal from the inside of the tooth. This procedure includes tooth root cleaning and disinfection of root canals as well as their filling to prevent further infection spreading. Tooth root surgery in Zagreb is recommended only if treatment does not bring the desired results or if the tooth is heavily damaged.

How to extract a tooth root? Two methods: classical and surgical

There are two main methods for the extraction of teeth roots:

  1. Classical tooth extraction: This procedure for tooth root extraction is used when the tooth is sufficiently visible and approachable. The dentist uses forceps for tooth or root extraction after the tooth is properly loosened and freed from the surrounding bone and tissue.
  2. Surgical tooth extraction: This tooth root extraction procedure is used when the tooth is partially knocked out, deeply rooted or if the root is broken. The surgeon makes an incision in the gum and often removes the part of the bone surrounding the root before he carefully extracts it. This procedure may demand stitches to close the wound.

What is apicoectomy?

Apicoectomy is a surgical procedure used to treat the infection on the tip of the root of the tooth, which is not possible to resolve with conventional root tooth treatment. The apicoectomy procedure is performed in the following way:

  • The first step includes examination and preparation during which the dentist or oral surgeon uses X-rays to evaluate the tooth condition and plan the operation. To reduce the pain, anaesthesia is applied.
  • The surgical incision is made by the surgeon in the gum to approach the tooth root and to expose the part of the root tip.
  • Removal of the root tip will follow to remove the infectious tissue and part of the root tip. The root canals are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
  • Restoration is performed after removing the root tip and cleaning, when the area is filled with material and gum is being stitched.

Tooth apicoectomy helps to preserve the tooth and prevent further complications when standard root canal treatment is not sufficiently effective.

What is the recovery like after tooth root extraction?

Tooth root extraction recovery usually takes a few days. In the first few days, pain, swelling and discomfort may occur. They are usually relieved with painkillers and cold compresses. Wound care includes maintaining the mouth clean and avoiding solid foods.

It is recommended to follow the dentist’s post-operative advice for taking medicines and avoiding smoking and alcohol which can slow down the recovery process. Most of the patients are easily recovered with the right care and applying the dentist’s instructions.
