Periodontics is a dental specialty dealing with studying and treating supporting structures of teeth. Supporting structures include gums, bones and tissue. These structures are subject to the effect of bacteria and acids which develop in the oral cavity, but also to genetic and hormonal causes.
Periodontitis is a disease which leads to the deterioration of supporting structures of teeth. The main causes of periodontitis are genetics, hormones and bacteria which develop due to inadequate oral hygiene and poor diet. This disease can cause teeth loss. It is extremely serious, so it is important to pay attention to its symptoms:
Tip: If you notice any of these symptoms, book an appointment with your dentist immediately.
Periodontitis develops in a couple of stages:
Note: The symptoms of periodontitis are not very intensive, so you should pay close attention to them and take good care of your oral hygiene to minimize bacteria in the oral cavity.
If your gums are sensitive and painful, but not bleeding, that does not exclude periodontitis. Most probably you have gingivitis, inflammation of gums, which is the first stage of periodontitis. We recommend you visit your dentist as soon as possible to determine the state of supporting structures and to develop a treatment plan.
In case you have genetic predispositions, but no symptoms of periodontitis, we recommend you visit your dentist preventively to determine the state of the supporting structures. Since the symptoms of periodontitis can be of low intensity, prevention is the best solution in such cases.
A proper oral hygiene includes regular brushing and care of your teeth, but also teeth cleaning and polishing at least once every six months, including regular visits to your dentist.
